Benefits of a Motorcycle Windshield
I guess when I was younger I probably thought windshields weren’t cool or maybe they took something away from the style of the bike. Well let me tell you something, a bug in the eye at 55 or 60 mph isn’t very cool or stylish either.
For most of my life I have now ridden motorcycles. I started with a small dirt bike that I bought from a friend and eventually progressed to street bikes that I still ride. During all this time of riding through the years I have never owned a bike with a windshield. I guess when I was younger I probably thought windshields weren’t cool or maybe they took something away from the style of the bike. Well let me tell you something, a bug in the eye at 55 or 60 mph isn’t very cool or stylish either.
Just a few days ago I purchased a windshield for my little Honda I ride and it changed my whole outlook on the bike. You see now as I ride it to work early in the morning my eyes no longer water from the cool air blowing in them. Also, I no longer have to wipe bugs from my face and my neck isn’t stiff from constantly pushing against the wind. I now have a four mile relaxing ride to work everyday instead of feeling like I’ve just been through a workout.
While motorcycles are dangerous machines to ride a good windshield does add a little bit of safety to the rider. Not only do they protect you from bugs but from other flying debris as well. Anything on the roadway is subject to be picked up by car tires and throw into the air. Sand, gravel, sticks and nails are just a few of the things I have seen. As you can imagine to a bike rider these could be extremely hazardous.
I guess my perception of what looks good has changed over the years for I think my new windshield has definitely improved the looks of my motorcycle. Almost any street bike made can now be fitted with a windshield that is both functional and stylish. So if you are a rider and don’t have one on your bike you might want to get one. Why bother you may ask? Because eye patches are only cool on pirates.
